“Let’s show our
True Patriot Love”
True Patriot Love
A brief introduction to the True Patriot Love Mackenzie Expedition.
VETERAN 1: I joined the military because I had a deep sense of purpose of serving my country.
VETERAN 2: On my second tour, we were the busiest team of the whole campaign in Afghanistan.
VETERAN 3: There was a lot of pretty close calls. When I came back, I started getting anxiety, getting stressed, depression. I found out that I have post-traumatic stress disorder.
VOICEOVER: What are we? We are a community of veterans. Why do we push ourselves so hard? Because that’s what we do. That’s who we are. And should we falter, another will lift us up. Never give up. Never give up.
DAVID FAASSEN: And that’s why Mackenzie Investments is supporting True Patriot Love Mackenzie Expedition. And that’s why I am supporting it as well.
True Patriot Love is a national charity that’s dedicated towards helping our serving military, veterans and their families make the transition back to civilian life. The Mackenzie Expedition is one that is actually retracing the last leg of Sir Alexander Mackenzie’s expedition in 1793. He was the one person who actually made the transcontinental trip – the first to cross North America. We start off in the interior BC, hiking for four or five days, then we raft down the Bella Coola River and then we spend four or five days in big 14-person Voyageur canoes to canoe out to the spot where he inscribed a plaque to mark the end of his journey.
The whole purpose of the Mackenzie Expedition is to raise funds and awareness and mentoring for veterans re-entering into civilian life. What True Patriot Love has done is matching business executives with veterans and bringing them together for a two week expedition. As part of that, we actually had a training camp in Gravenhurst, Ontario, a couple of weeks ago, where the business execs got to meet with the veterans and test our gear, make sure that we had the right stuff and test our fitness level. This was perhaps a bit of an eye opener for some of us, where we realized that to be able to accomplish a two week expedition of this nature, that we perhaps had to dedicate a little more time towards the fitness component, but all in all, it was a very worthwhile, exciting opportunity – to meet the people we are going to be spending a significant amount of time with.
And why is Mackenzie Investments supporting this? First, we have a history of supporting True Patriot Love. Second, we have a long history of supporting the communities we serve. In Canada’s 150th birthday and it’s also Mackenzie’s 50th birthday, we felt that there’s no better way to commemorate both of these events then by supporting our veterans. Mackenzie employees have been fantastic throughout this whole endeavour. Teams have been actively fundraising, selling hats, doing raffles and raising awareness generally, but our ambitions are much loftier than that. We do not want to leave it there. We want to engage Canadians in such a fantastic cause to honour and support our veterans.
I want to thank you, invite you to come back to this page, as we’ll be updating the content nearer to the expedition. Find out more about True Patriot Love and the great causes that they support and above all else, please donate. Thank you very much.
The plight of Canadian veterans is a topic that is very close to my heart. That is why from July 9-23, I will participate in the True Patriot Love Scotiabank Mackenzie Expedition. In a team of Canadian business executives and soldiers, I will recreate the last leg of Sir Alexander Mackenzie’s monumental journey through British Columbia. We will hike over the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, white-water raft down the Bella Coola River and then paddle ocean canoes out to the explorer’s historic inscription: “First crossing of North America by land, July 22, 1793, in the Pacific.”
Mackenzie Investments has a longstanding commitment to being an active community partner. Proceeds from our fundraiser will support the True Patriot Love Foundation, a national charity that works to inspire every Canadian to contribute to the resilience and wellbeing of military and Veteran families.
It’s an honour to be a part of this expedition and step up for the brave Canadian men and women who serve our country. To do so in the year that Mackenzie Investments celebrates its 50th anniversary and Canada recognizes its 150th anniversary only adds to my excitement.
You can also be a part of this experience!
Be sure to return to this page to check out the route and watch my videos, which will cover me preparing for the trip and the actual expedition across BC. If you’d like to show your support, please consider donating to this worthwhile cause. Together, we can make a substantial difference in the lives of veterans and their families.
