Mackenzie Mid Cap Canadian Equity

Inception: December 1997¹

Benchmark: S&P/TSX Total Return Completion Index

Lead Portfolio Manager: Bryan Shearer, CFA

Investment Adviser: Mackenzie Financial Corporation

Portfolio Advantage

  • Well diversified across sectors, tends to hold fewer “big banks” and has a broader opportunity set relative to large-cap Canadian equity portfolios.
  • Smaller average cap size than the broad market, and typically portfolio characteristics will include stronger growth and growth momentum metrics than the broad Canadian market index.
  • All-weather strategy with a focus on high quality Canadian companies that are in the early, high growth stage of their life cycle.

Investment Philosophy

The Mackenzie GLC Team combines top-down macro-level analysis with fundamental bottom-up research. The team seeks to identify industry risks, competitive opportunities and macro trends to influence sector allocations. This top-down view is augmented by a disciplined and thorough fundamental due diligence process to identify companies that are positioned to outperform. Within well-defined risk parameters, the team seeks out companies across the market cap spectrum and will take meaningful positions in specific companies when opportunities present themselves.

Investment Approach

  • Growth-oriented management style that blends top-down macro-analysis with bottom-up fundamental stock research.
  • The portfolio manager seeks to identify industry risks, competitive opportunities and macro trends to influence sector allocations.
  • Disciplined fundamental research to identify companies that are positioned to deliver strong results, such as having superior management, the flexibility of a small- or mid-cap company to adapt to changing economic conditions, and a competitive product or service advantage relative to industry peers.
  • Target 50-90 holdings diversified across sector and industry, primarily in mid-sized Canadian stocks.
