Epic Trail: The Value of Advice for Explorer Alexander Mackenzie

Explorer Alexander Mackenzie succeeded in his arduous journey to reach the Pacific Ocean in 1793 because he followed good advice. When Mackenzie reached the Fraser River in a leaky canoe, the Nuxälk and Carrier people advised him to take an overland route to the coast because navigating the river was too dangerous. Mackenzie took their advice and followed a trail to salt water near Bella Coola, becoming the first European to cross North America overland, north of Mexico.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation, Canadian Armed Forces veterans and business leaders will follow the last leg of Mackenzie’s expedition in B.C. The adventurers, including David Faassen, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Mackenzie Investments, will hike the Coast Mountains, raft down the Bella Coola River then paddle ocean canoes to where Alexander Mackenzie ended his historic crossing.

“We have to do a lot of hiking and paddling to make it to the Pacific Ocean so our guides will provide vital support during this remarkable experience,” said Mr. Faassen. “Like Alexander Mackenzie, I will follow the advice of our guides for how to achieve our goals along the trail.”

The two-week journey is also a fundraiser for the True Patriot Love Foundation, a charity that supports military families. The Foundation helps military families with physical rehabilitation, transitioning to civilian life and other support. Mackenzie Investments is the platinum sponsor of the True Patriot Love Scotiabank Mackenzie Expedition from July 9-23. Travelling in the footsteps of the intrepid Mackenzie, even for a short distance, requires planning, focus and discipline, which are also helpful qualities for investing. Mackenzie Investments believes investors are more successful when they work with a professional financial advisor. An advisor can help you stay on course and work with you to achieve your goals, whatever they may be.

Advised households have approximately twice the level of financial assets as their non-advised counterparts, and this advantage grows over time, according to the Montréal-based Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis on Organizations. Other research has indicated that people who work with advisors have higher confidence about their retirement readiness.

Alexander Mackenzie recognized the value of advice and his decision to follow guidance enabled him to complete a monumental expedition.
