Darren McKiernan on Performance

Hi, my name is Darren McKiernan. I am a Senior Vice President of Mackenzie Investments, and the Head of the Global Equity & Income Team.My main responsibility is running the core global dividend products at Mackenzie. Our real goal is to generate superior risk-adjusted returns. Above-average returns, but with below-average volatility.

We want to own diverse superior businesses, no matter where they're located in the world. We are, what we call, style agnostic. We own value companies, and we own what are considered growth companies.

The thing about investing is no matter how much work you do, how well you know the company, how well you think you understand the business, the world is a fluid and dynamic place, and you can still be wrong. It's not the winners that ultimately are gonna determine performance, it's managing your mistakes.

I think part of our advantage is that we look out beyond one or two quarters.

The market can be very short-term thinking, making those judgment calls based on what we think that'll look like next year, three years from now, 10 years from now, that really is invigorating.

All my public equity investments are in just the funds that I run. I think it's the right thing to do. It aligns my interests with every unit holder. They know that anything that happens to the fund - good, bad, or otherwise - I feel it as much as they do. It makes for very easy conversations when we're talking to clients.
